thats where you are wrong, pak. It isn't only drum beats and the riffs that make a song, it is the total feel that you get when you listen to it, whether it is a feel-good warmth or snugness you get or the blazing murderous rage or the ashen melancholy or the blissful blithe or the despondent maudlin or the insidious daggers that you get from a song. i mean, if its only the drum beats or riff that touches you, you might as well stick your head inside a bass drum or amplifier and get totally siked by it. thats not the way, technicality only helps you to a certain extent in making music, but its the emotions your pour into your playing that matters. when Will Champion of Coldplay plays the drums on 'In my place' he uses a simple drumming: 2x snare 1x snare drum 2x bass drum, accentuated by momentous crashes and such. but you realise the his simple beat for the song brings out the true slow-paced deep melancholy in the song's meaning. the momentous crashes signifies a surge in emotions in the flow of the song, when Chris Martin shifts voice tone to a high near the chorus. It just gels together into a nice flow, and that is what truly distinguishes a good song from a lousy one. Every riff every note every drum beat every solo every chorus has its meaning. and whats the point of not understanding what the song's about? =) thats why i will never go into j-rock, even though i know, they are theoratically more techinically-sound(not necessarily true - i know some bands that can wipe their asses on the floor, and yes they sing in coherent english. =D)
